Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin S. Binay said Makati will host the event in partnership with Earth Day Network Philippines, Inc. (EDNPI), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Ayala Land Inc. (ALI), and Ayala Foundation, Inc.

“I would like to invite everyone to join us this Sunday and participate in the environmental activities that we have lined up for this event,” Binay said.
Earth Day 2012 aims to demonstrate the shared commitment of all stakeholders, including government and the private sector, to promoting a healthy and sustainable environment.

Binay will be joined by other government officials and guests at the celebration, including DENR Secretary Ramon Paje and EDNPI Chair Bert Guevarra.

Meanwhile, DES Officer-in-charge Danilo Villas said the event will highlight the oath taking of 174 members of the Anti Plastic Monitoring Task Force of Makati. The Task Force is tasked to strictly monitor the compliance of all supermarkets, restaurants, public markets and other similar establishments to City Ordinance No. 2003-095, also known as the Solid Waste Management Code.

Also part of the main event for Earth Day 2012 is the declaration of Earth Day Ambassadors, namely, host and environmentalist Kim Atienza, Ambassador for Biodiversity Conservation and Reforestation and cartoon character Doraemon, Ambassador for Youth Environmental Empowerment, to be led by EDNPI Chair Bert Guevarra.

A Mass for Earth will be conducted at 6am to be followed by Ehersisyo at Diyalogo, a regular Sunday fitness program which aims to promote a culture of wellness among constituents of Makati while providing a venue for meaningful interaction between key city officials and members of the business community.

At 7:40am, parade participants including EDNPI, DENR, City government of Makati, ALI, PLDT, Ms. Earth Foundation Inc. and barangays from districts I and II, will join an E(cological) Lakad, where three groups will march on each side of the Ayala Triangle along Paseo de Roxas and Makati Avenue. Upon reaching three main points: Makati Avenue corner Arnaiz Avenue, Makati Central Fire Station, and Ayala corner Paseo de Roxas, marchers will encourage motorists to turn off their engines for one minute for the Tigil Buga event. After this, participants will assemble at Ayala triangle Gardens for the main event.

To spice up the event, Angklung and Ritwal ng Paghihilom will perform environmental dances and music. Simultaneously an environmental story telling will be conducted to educate the people most especially the youth on protecting and conserving the Earth’s natural resources.

Likewise, EDNPI shall showcase their newest project called “Agos Ram Pump”, with funding support from Coca Cola USA. It aims to bring water to upland communities through the ram pump water system of Ramon Magsaysay Awardee, Auke Idzenga of Bacolod City. Also to be featured is an Unlitrike booth where a prototype electric tricycle will be displayed. It is called “unli” because of its mechanism that allows its battery to recharge while it runs.

The events are sponsored by Holcim Philippines, PLDT, Smart, Globe, Nestle Philippines, Miss Earth Foundation, Inc., and USAID-CEnergy
