How to Quit Smoking?

I am not a smoker nor I dare to try smoking, but I know lots of people who smoke.  There are many reasons why people smoke; for some it's a great ice breaker, it gives you time to think, the feeling of first puff in the morning is incomparable and, most of all, you look cool ( to some people, but not to all).


I hate smoke and also the smokers that don't consider other people inhaling the smoke.  I don't know if they're unaware of the bad effects of second hand smoke or they just intended to do it (well, I really don't know).

Many smokers started smoking because they wanted to fit in, to belong in a group; maybe everybody around them smoked.  It's a cool and trendy until you can't go up a flight of stairs without sounding like you ran a marathon.  Many either get emphysema or lung cancer, or sometimes both.  You have to stop it before it gets serious.


So what are the best ways to quit smoking?  Well, my grandmother was a smoker but she was able to quit and here are some tips:
  1. Find a substitute.  Psychologists have linked smoking to oral fixation.  If you can't get over the craving of putting something in your mouth, buy gum or drink a cup of tea.  Whatever suits your fancy, just don't pick a cigarette.  To minimize your cravings, change your routine.  My grandmother used this method.  Every morning when she feels like smoking, instead of lighting a ciggy, she chew some candy or bubble gum.
  2. Change your friends.  Or at least don't tell them you're quitting.  It's very hard to quit if every time  you hang out with friends, they're blowing smoke into your face.  
  3. If you relapse, just start again.  You haven’t failed. Some people have to quit as many as eight times before they are successful.
  4. Create a smoke-free zone.  Don’t allow anyone to use tobacco in your home, car, or even while sitting next to you in a restaurant. Make actual “No Smoking” signs and hang them around your house and in your car.
  5. Post this list in a visible location in your house/office. Whenever you’re tempted to light up, take a look at all the ways smoking can damage your health:
    • Increases risk of lung, bladder, pancreatic, mouth, esophageal, and other cancers, including leukemia
    • Reduces fertility
    • Contributes to thin bones
    • Affects mental capacity and memory
    • Reduces levels of folate, low levels of which can increase the risk of heart disease, depression, and Alzheimer’s disease
    • Increases likelihood of impotence
    • Affects ability to smell and taste
    • Results in low-birth-weight, premature babies
    • Increases risk of depression in adolescents
    • Increases risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure
    • Increases risk of diabetes
    • Increases your child’s risk of obesity and diabetes later in life if you smoked while pregnant
    6. Just quit.  If you've tried every possible way, like smoking less or using nicotine patches, try simply quitting cold turkey.  You'll gain weight, becomes an angry and irritable person, and might even lose some friends along the way, but at least, you get to live to at least age 70.
